Pardee, Ann J.S. (Pearre)93, passed away peacefully at Medford Leas on January 14, 2010. She was 93. Born November 30, 1916 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of Aubrey Pearre and Fanny Moncure Pearre (nee Lyon). She graduated from Vassar in 1939 with an interest in Geology, Art and all things interesting. Prior to Medford Leas, in Medford, NJ, she lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for 20 years, and prior to that in New Vernon, NJ. She was a passionate conservationist from childhood, racing her Star against the Gibson Island fleet on the Chesapeake Bay and packing through the Rocky Mountains from Wyoming into British Columbia. As an adult she devoted time to saving the Great Swamp in New Jersey, and supported the Trustees of the Reservation in Martha's Vineyard, MA, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, among others. She salvaged antique furniture and artwork and restored Grapeland, an 1820 Federal house in Wardtown, VA, a Virginia Landmark property subsequently featured in books and magazines. In addition to conservation and preservation, she was a committed gardener, rescuer and keeper of mules, Airedales, ponies, peacocks, and chickens, as well as hunter of raccoons, bluefish, crabs, oysters, clams and geese. Beloved mother of Jonathan Lee of Islesboro, ME, William Lyon of Dedham, MA, Thomas Nelson of Califon, NJ, and Katharine Frances of Oxford, England, she is also survived by a brother Aubrey and sisters Elizabeth and Sarah Pearre, 4 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her son Schuyler, grandson Jonathan Schuyler, and sister Fanny Pearre Johnston died earlier. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org), Chesapeake Bay Foundation (www.cbf.org), Trustees of the Reservation (www.thetrustees.org), Virginia Historical Society (www.vahistorical.org) or other conservation program. Arrangements by Lechner Funeral Home, Medford.
