William R. Reeves, Jr., age 89, a World War II Veteran and resident of the Leisuretowne Section of Southampton, NJ died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Cooper Medical Center in Camden, NJ. Born in N. Carolina, he resided in Nutley, NJ for 34 years before moving to Southampton 23 years ago. He served as an M.P. in the European Theater during World War II, then went on to attend Biarritz School of Journalism in France following V-E Day. Upon returning home, Bill began working on the Newark Evening News, and from there went on to work 36 years on the Passaic Herald News, retiring as Assistant Stereotype Supervisor. While residing in Nutley, Bill became an active member of the Nutley Lodge #25 F & AM; served as Dad Advisor of the Boys' DeMolay organization; and Worthy Patron of the Nutley O.E.S., #121. Bored with retirement, Bill applied for and became an elementary School Crossing Guard in Nutley. He moved to Southampton in 1987. While there, he served on the Towne Watch, was a charter member of the Veterans' Club, a 20 year member of the Ballroom Dance Club, a member of the Pine Barrens Square Club, plus gathered and wrote the "Happy Occasion Club" column in the monthly Leisuretowne Watch Dog, for 12 years, adlibbing with humorous comments of his own. Bill was a member of the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. Bill is survived by his wife, Cleo, son William R., III of Haddonfield, daughter Sharon R. Berke of Naples, FL, four grandchildren, Jennifer Godreau, Courtney Berke, Leigh Anne Vrooman, and William L. Reeves and three great grandchildren, Claire and Sloane Godreau and Cael Vrooman. A Viewing will be held Thursday, 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM, with a Masonic Service at 8 PM at the Lechner Funeral Home, 24 N. Main St., Medford. Funeral Services will be Friday, 11 AM at the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, 304 Philos Bridge Rd. Southampton, NJ. Interment is private.
